Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II returns to consoles and PC with another perfunctory remaster. Make no mistake, I’m thrilled this release means I can rekindle some nostalgic moments – even in couch-coop – without having to dig out old hardware or deal with an emulator and ROMs. That said, I still think the pricing is too high to attract curious gamers who’ve only heard about the IP from those with a nostalgic hook.

Here’s a first look at the opening 15-minutes on an Xbox Series S, demonstrating the basic gameplay loop and somewhat effective upscaling used to get it looking a little prettier on modern displays. Of course, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II is still an 18-year-old game but it was a big improvement over its predecessor, shifting closer to a Diablo-esque ARPG with more classes, monster types, gear, skills, and diverse environments (and a less crushing default difficulty).

Now, I just hope someone can figure out who owns the rights to the Champions of Norrath games so they can receive the same treatment.

With the release of Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 2 on steam, I felt it was time to dive back into this game to decide if it is worth the purchase or if we should wait until a price drop. I played this both on playstation 2 and on steam so I could see the differences so you all don’t have to.
